Battle of the Food

So for anyone who knows my family, you know Sophia is the pickiest child in the world. I (unfortunately) have never really addressed this issue until recently. I realized how hindering and sometimes rude it is for her to always want her way when it comes to what goes in her tummy. I finally put my foot down this past Monday. I made her some cheese and chicken quesadillas for dinner. However, the chicken was gross (her words) and she didn't feel like eating it. So I laid down my new rule. If she didn't eat it then, she would have the meal served to her every other meal until she ate it. Not a hard concept. However, the last time I tried this, I caved before she did. Bad idea. So Tuesday, she chose to eat nothing all day. Well, this morning she wakes me up early and is begging for a banana. The conversation goes as follows:

Sophie: "Mommy I am really hungry. Please can I have a banana? "

Mommy: "No Sophie. You need to eat the food Mommy makes for you. I would be a bad mommy if I didn't."

S: "No, mommy. You will still be a good mommy if you just throw it away!"

And to complete the image, add a pouty lip, crocodile tears, and lots of whining. And finally, after many tears, begging, and spankings, she caved!!!!! I won! She ate the food without complaining.

Good Job! We deal with similar issues and I have decided that I can't care if my kids like the food or not- they have to eat what they are served. :) Hold fast and be of good courage!!

Gold star for Nicole!

Hopefully there will be a day when Sophie will eat her supper the day it was served her :.)

It's kind of like with Mia:

When she's twelve we won't have to reward her for going on the potty :)

Well I'm glad you decided to be a good mommy to Sophia. This will be interesting to see how this affects other areas of her upbringing!

That sounds like my house! My dad says the battle doesn't matter as long as the parent wins! :>)

My, what memories your post brought back for me of our similar stuggles with our little ones! Simply stated, we also saved the uneaten food for the next meal, assuring the child that it would be the next food they would eat in this life, trying to be confident that he or she would not voluntarily starve. Scarily, one child did wait a few days, but, in the end, we won. Whew, that was a tough one! -- Judith
