Though Troubles Assail Us

John Newton, has a pretty popular story. He was born in London, in 1725, and raised by a godly mother (who taught him the Westminster Catechism), and had a sea-faring father. In his early years, John Newton, was a slave trader and led a, well, a sailors life. It was on a voyage, after a terrifying storm, that he wrote,
"I thought I saw the hand of God displayed in our favour. I began to pray: I could not utter the prayer of faith; I could not draw near to a reconciled God, and call him Father . . . the comfortless principles of infidelity were deeply riveted; . . . . The great question now was, how to obtain faith."
This was a quite a change from Newton's previous thought's, but he later said,
" I was greatly deficient in many respects. I was in some degree affected with a sense of my enormous sins, but I was little aware of the innate evils of my heart. I had no apprehension of . . . the hidden life of a Christian, as it consists in communion with God by Jesus Christ: a continual dependence on him. . . . I acknowledged the Lord's mercy in pardoning what was past, but depended chiefly upon my own resolution to do better for the time to come. . . . I cannot consider myself to have been a believer (in the full sense of the word) till a considerable time afterwards."

Later in life, John Newton became a devoted husband, a tender pastor, author, and friend to many well-known men.
I could go on to say more, but I've decided to make this brief. Kinda a "wet your appetite" biography.
Oh, when googling "John Newton", I stumbled upon this article by John Piper. I started reading it, then I stopped, and scrolled down...and down, down, down, and finally came to the end! All this to say, the blogpost is very long-- and I didn't finish it-- but from what I read, I would encourage you to read it (and tell me about it :P).

This hymn is one that my family discovered in our Trinity Hymnals (Baptist Ed.), because it has the same tune as Immortal, Invisible, which we love. When looking up this hymn, there are two more verses, which are not in the Trinity Hymnal, so I just left them out for now.

Though Trouble Assail Us

Though troubles assail us and dangers affright,
Though friends should all fail us and foes all unite,
Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide,
The promise assures us, “The Lord will provide.”

The birds, without garner or storehouse, are fed;
From them let us learn to trust God for our bread.
His saints what is fitting shall ne’er be denied
So long as ’tis written, “The Lord will provide.”

When Satan assails us to stop up our path,
And courage all fails us, we triumph by faith.
He cannot take from us, though oft he has tried,
This heart cheering promise, “The Lord will provide.”

No strength of our own and no goodness we claim;
Yet, since we have known of the Savior’s great Name,
In this our strong tower for safety we hide:
The Lord is our power, “The Lord will provide.”

-John Newton(1779)

mary poppins: part six

As I type this there are hundreds of things going through my head, then again, isn't that what usually happens before one goes on an extended trip? (Did I pack enough socks? Should I make time to blog everyday? I wonder if we'll be able to finish a read-aloud book while I'm there? Should I bring exercise weights? Gee whiz, I'm going to have to start getting up really early again!) Yes, the time has come for me to take a trip to Austin, my Aunt has had her seventh baby and I am so excited to be serving in the role of cook, chauffeur baker, laundress, baby swaddler, nanny, server of tea and scones (a tradition for my Aunt and I), companion of honorary mama, and chief baby-bottle washer. This makes the fourth time I've come and made myself comfortable in their guest room; though I really didn't blog the last time I was there, I did make it a point to keep a daily journal of sorts after the birth of Joshua (Baby #4) and this time around I plan to similarly document my time there (keyword=plan).

There are so many things I love about helping the Apodaca's.
For one, it truly brings to life how sweet is the sleep of the laborer; I love working hard during the day, then dropping onto my bed at night. Whether it's those loads of laundry, strapping little people into car seats, running up and down the stairs, or helping someone with their arithmetic, one has no time to be idle! Contrary to popular belief, grocery shopping/daily outings with children can be a hilarious, exciting, and wonderful experience; descriptive stories to come soon, I'm sure. ;)

Considering the late hour of this post, there is much more that will come soon!
In the meantime, know that my suitcase is still being filled, fun things to do with the children is still being planned, I'm struggling to decide whether to head straight to bed and get as much precious sleep as possible or have a late night bowl of cereal and talk with my family (if only I could do both!), and I'm looking forward to the adventures to be had in the coming weeks.

I hope you'll be joining me for them. : )

Elizabeth Joy

Grab This!

Our dear friends, the Rectors, have been in the adoption process for quite some time now. Earlier this week, they got the long-awaited phone call from the agency! They will be traveling out of the country in about two weeks. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the adoption process in this specific country, the Rectors will have to go twice to the country and on the second trip will bring Elizabeth home. Please pray for them as they are making preparations for their trip.

Because of some in-country concerns, their blog has been made private and the name of the country as well. As soon as their blog is public again, I will update this post so that you can view it.

I'm so excited to meet Elizabeth Joy soon!

In Christ,
~Micaela

Update: Their blog is now available to read for more updates.

Estate Sale find!

An estate sale find in Austin!
A first edition book, in wonderful condition, but what attracted me was that the previous owner was a colonel of, I'm assuming, the Air Force. His name was written in the first page (in clear, exact print). This colonel was apparently the one that died, because the estate sale was selling all different kinds of plaques and framed documents. It was all very impressive. Though I paid more for this book than normal, I thought it was worth it!

Close up on the corner of the book. I'm not sure if it has any significance.
Anyone know?

Another estate sale find, except in Houston. I thought it was a cute book, and I probably paid $2 or something. I'm currently reading this book. The book is 26 mini biographies of famous men (Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, James Whitcomb Riley, Robert Dollar, and Calvin Coolidge, to name a few) and the story of their childhoods. A children's book from 1932. I was thinking about selling it, if it isn't that great of a read.

A little bit nicked and worn, but in good, readable condition!

2012 Film Festival!

Back in 2009, my family and I went to the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival; we had a great time, and have been meaning to go again. So this year Mica and I hitched a ride with some good friends. With these kind of events, you can't count on getting more than six hours of sleep. Why? Because, either the sessions go out late, you have a long drive to and from the convention center, you're wired on caffeine, OR you're a social bug and like to chat with people till all hours of the night. Ninety percent of people will fall into at least two of these categories. We were everything but the long drive to and from the convention center and the caffeine, so we sometimes got seven hours of sleep. :) By all means, I am not complaining; just pointing out the facts.

The stage...from the third floor! It was quite nauseating to be up so high.

All of us GfBC kids with Stephen Kendrick.
It's funny, it started with one person introducing himself to Mr. Kendrick, then everyone slowly gravitated and surrounded him. It felt like a gang.

George Sarris.

Saturday night, we got to meet Emily and Josiah Jost, who, with their siblings, produce the Jostie Flicks (of which I highly recommend for a good laugh).

Charlie Zahm and Tad sang every night...

Over the weekend, we tagged along with chatted with Hannah Mendenhall

Virginia Phillips carried some of the awards to the stage.
Later in the evening, she sang a song with Charlie Zahm and Tad. It was really cute!

The pretty side of the food court that we and a bunch of friends ate at.
We had a great weekend of movies, fellowship, and meeting new people (I guess that counts with fellowship).

If I Stand

My family and I have grown up with Rich Mullin's album Songs (1996), particularly the first seven songs. It was only in the past years that I learned to appreciate the actual words in the songs. Though I've never really listened to many other of his songs, there are a few that I really like. From what I know, Rich Mullins died after getting a car wreck and an eighteen wheeler swerved to miss the car, but killed Rich Mullins. Also, from what I know, he was kind of quirky, but he impacted many artist with his music. His words are very meaningful and rather poetic. So here is his song:

If I Stand

There's more that rises in the morning than the sun
And more that shines in the night than just the moon
There's more than just this fire here that keeps me warm
In a shelter that is larger than this room

{Chorus} And there's a loyalty that's deeper than mere sentiments
And a music higher than the songs that I can sing
Stuff of Earth competes for the allegiance
I owe only to the Giver of all good things
So if I stand let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through
And if I can't, let me fall on the grace that first brought me to You
So if I sing let me sing for the joy that has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for his home

And there's more that dances on the prairies than the wind
And more that pulses in the ocean than the tide
There's a love that's fiercer than the love between friends
More gentle than a mother's when her baby's at her side

Chorus {2x}

And if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for home

- Rich Mullins
