A Book Review

Andrew Peterson is a Christian man who is also the author of one of my favorite series, The Wingfeather Saga which contains the books On The Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, North! Or Be Eaten, and his latest, The Monster In the Hollows. We were first introduced to Andrew Peterson by some dear friends and since then, we have enjoyed his music and books.

The Monster In the Hollows continues the story of Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli Wingfeather. Strange and funny characters, names that make you laugh, places you wish you could see, the holiness and power of Christ, and a story that captivates you from beginning to end is what this books contains. And as with all books that are part of a series, this one leaves you quite cliff-hanging!

My favorite part is towards the end of the story, where someone (no spoilers here) is discussing strength and weakness and says to Kalmar:

"But it's weakness that the Maker turns to strength."

The entire quote gives away some spoilers but this sentence captures the essence of what he is conveying: our deepest need is Christ! We, as humans, are weak and dead in our sins but God, in spite of our weaknesses, uses us to the praise of His glorious name. His grace is sufficient to carry us through the trials that conform us to Christ's image. It reminds me of 2 Corinthians 12:7-10:

"So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

You can buy The Monster In the Hollows at Amazon or at his printing press, The Rabbit Room.

In Christ,
